Nanocell Labs at MIT are in the process of developing nanocells capable of delivering both types of drugs. Each nanocell is between 120 and 200 _m in diameter and can be thought of as “a balloon within a balloon.” Inside each nanocell is a chemotherapeutic drug covalently bound to a polymer, and on the surface of each cell is a lipid coat containing an anti-angiogenic drug. The technology makes use of the fact that a tumor’s blood vessels have pores 600 _m in diameter and are much leakier than normal blood vessels, which have pores only around 50 _m in diameter. The nanocells circulate in the blood, and because of their size, they leak out of blood vessels only in tumors. Once there, the nanocells are degraded by enzymes produced by the tumor. Work remains to be done to win clinical approval for the technology, but results from Sengupta’s lab indicate that the nanocells are more effective and less toxic than traditional chemotherapy.
Nanocell The term nanocell refers to a drug delivery platform consisting of a polymer-bound chemotherapeutic drug combined with a lipid-bound anti-angiogenesis drug. Nanocells are currently being developed in the lab of Shiladitya Sengupta of MIT.
Creeper (comics) Initially wanting nothing to do with the Creeper, Ryder lets him out when the yellow-skinned creature convinces him to seek revenge on their would-be killers. During their pursuit of the criminals, the Creeper and Ryder learn that Yatz has secretly intended the smart-skin to be a weapon. Side effects of its use on human subjects seems to be a loss of mental control, along with the test subjects all getting yellow skin and a mixture of red and green hair. Yatz credits these side effects on the mind and body as resulting from a nerve agent (provided by his silent partner) he had added to the nanocells. This partner is revealed to be the Joker, who had hoped to combine his Joker venom (which causes temporary madness and usually death by laughter) and Yatz's technology to create an army of maniacal, super-strong, near-immortal soldiers. Batman and Ryder defeat the Joker, who later attacks Yatz in revenge. Batman discovers Ryder's double identity and creates a chemical agent that can cure him of the Creeper, but Ryder refuses and forms a truce with his alter ego, agreeing to let the Creeper out from time to time to fight criminals while hiding his identity from everyone including news rival and love interest Vera Sweet.
Vincent Yatz This version sees Dr Yatz as a scientestlike before, and Jack Ryder, sensationalist host of the TV talk-show “You Are Wrong”, goes to get a scoop on Doctor Yatz’s big unveiling of artificial nanocell technology. He arrives early, only to find that gangster, Mike "Hagop" Hewsen and his gang are trying to strong-arm a sample of the nanocells from the Doctor Yatz. Thanks to some self-defense training, the captive Jack overpowers his captor and takes his gun. After that Jack takes Doctor Yatz prisoner himself and attempts to get Hewsen and his men to back off and leave the building with both of them unharmed. Not wanting to leave the last sample for the gangsters, Dr. Yatz injects it into Jack Ryder, to his surprise. Then things start to go wrong, and Hagop Hewsen and his gang overpower Jack Ryder and Dr. Yatz. They drag them off, shoot Jack and throw his body off a cliff. The nanocell experiment that was injected into Jack Ryder quickly transforms his body, and The Creeper is born! he quickly dispatches his captors but Dr Yatz gets kidnapped by Hewsen and gets taken to Hewsen's father Bolo Hewsen at their mansion.
